Second Hard Drive Tut

Temporally install Hard Drive form one computer [PC-1] as slave on second computer [PC-2]
1.With PC-1 turned off and unplugged from the wall open the case
2.Locate the hard drive and remove it
3.With PC-2 turned off and unplugged from the wall open the case
4.Locate the hard drive make sure that the jumper is set to 'Master'. You may have to remove it to check
it. The jumper block is usually located on the left hand side as you look at the back and on top of it
there should be a diagram of the settings.
5.Set the jumper PC-1 to 'Slave'
6.Plug the last connector on the 'Ribbon' into the 'Master'
7.Plug the next connector in to the 'Slave' [PC-1 hard drive] You don't have to screw it into the case just
make sure that it is not leaning against the mother board.
8.Plug in the power connectors
9.Plug the PC into the wall and start it
10.XP will find it and install it assigning it a drive letter.
11.Go to 'Windows Explorer' expand 'My computer'
12.Locate both drives and expand them
13.Locate the files that you want to move to the ‘Master’ from the 'Slave'
14.Drag and drop them into the 'Master'
15.Shut down windows, turn off PC and unplug from wall.
16.Remove the salve drive
17.Close case, plug into wall and start. The files will now be on PC-2
18.Change the jumper on the PC-1 disk back to 'Master' and put it back in the PC-1 case.
19.Connect the ribbon and power cables. Close the case.
Installing a second [Slave] Hard Drive
1.With the PC turned off and unplugged from the wall open the case
2.Locate the hard drive make sure that the jumper is set to 'Master'. You may have to remove it to check
it. The jumper block is usually located on the left hand side as you look at the back and on top of it there
should be a diagram of the settings.
3.Set the jumper on the hard drive you wish to install to 'Slave'
4.Plug the last connector on the 'Ribbon' into the 'Master'
5.Plug the next connector in to the 'Slave'
6.Plug in the power connectors
7.Slide the hard drive into place and screw it in.
8.Close the case.
9.Plug the PC into the wall and start it
10.XP will find it install it and assign it a drive letter.
11.Go to 'Windows Explorer' expand 'My computer'
12.Locate both drives and expand them
13.If you do not see the new drive you may have to go into the Bios [usually by hitting ‘Delete, F1 or F2
at start up]
14.Your new ‘Slave’ drive will be empty the ‘Master’ will have your operating system [XP, Win98se,
etc.] on it
15.Right click on your new drive and select ‘Format’
16.If given the option select your file system [NTFS for NT and XP and Fat 32 for the older operating
systems] . If not you can use this:

17.Click OK
18.After the format is complete you may want to partition it. Now is the time. However if you are just
using it to store files this is unnecessary.
19.Locate the files that you want to move to the 'Slave' from the ‘Master’
20.Click on the first one then hold down Ctrl click on the rest of them. Right click on the last one and
select ‘Cut’. Right click on the Slave Drive and select ‘Paste’
21.I put an Icon on my ‘Desktop’ for quick access to the slave drive for fast access to my files. To do this
right click on ‘My Computer on the desktop then find the drive, right click on it and select ‘Short cut’,
click OK.
