Anyone on the board have a food vacuum sealer ? Wifey has seen one on the tv and wants one, I'm just wondering if they are any good before I spend my hard earned on one. I've seen the shopping sites video ads on the net but they don't convince me.

I don't have one but I do know people who do and they love them. I have always wanted one too.

We have one Rodders, and use it frequently. We buy a lot of our meat in quantity and package it with the Food Saver (which is what we have).
If you use it a lot the bags are expensive. When I bought this one I bought a large roll of it. We have to seal both ends, but it's more cost efficient.

i've got a kenmore seal 'n save and just love it. hubby and son bought it for me 2 or 3 years ago and it comes in so handy. i use it like linda to put up extra meat when it's on sale and during canning time to freeze veggies. i also use it to freeze leftovers. it saves room in the freezer instead of freezing in food containers.
not to long ago i found a black and decker model at a garage sale and chewed her down to three dollars for it. so if something happens to my kenmore, i have this one to fall back on. i really bought it for mike and amy, thinking that in the future they would have a garden and could use it.
yes, the bags can be expensive. now i'm using the wal mart brand. i believe it's called great value, and they seem to be working just fine. what brand were you thinking of buying??

Thanks for your opinions folks You won't believe how hard it is to buy one of these machines in the local large stores around here, not one of them carry stock I finished up buying one from here > www.jmldirect.com/Food-Sealer-PF1017/I bought 1 roll and 2 packs of bags from another online shop and they were as dear as the machine on it's own Think I'll be trying standard food/freezer bags to see if they work.

Be careful if your sealing anything with liquid, ie. strawberries. My ex did that and got the juice in the machine...needless to say...it's no longer working. ;D

Well, the machine has arrived, along with two free bag rolls, free !!!, yeah right.Mrs Rodders has been having a play with it and she has been bagging up all manner of things.....Hmmm, come to think of it, where's the cat... LOL Her report is.....amazing, so it's off to the meat auctions on Sat to stock up the freezer. I did notice one thing in the preservation guidelines about bread after vacuum sealing. Before sealing...2/3 days at room temperature. After sealing.... 8/10 Months at room temperature...WOW. Footnote: If you don't hear from me for a while.....she'll have no doubt sealed up the damn keyboard and mouse

My ex did that and got the juice in the machine...needless to say...it's no longer working. ;D Good advice and thanks for the heads up GF. I do strawberries every year. I don't know that I'd have given it a thought. Always rushing to get stuff done. We bought ours for packaging meat, and I suspect that's all we'll use it for. I froze my green beans in regular zip lock freezer bags. Rodders: Loved your comment. Better hide for a while.
