we planted two hills of watermelon, and 2 hills of cantaloupe across from each other in the back of the garden. will they cross pollenate ane create a new breed of fruit? also, has anyone grown potatoes before?? i heard that you have to put soil on the several times after they germinate. however, on one gardening site i was on, it is not mentioned... any comments?

Barb, the only thing you have to do with potatoes is 'hill them' as the potatoes grow. In other words, keep adding dirt to the base forming a 'hill' around them.
The potatoes will grow out of the ground if you don't. Hubby's family grew potatoes back in their farming days and sold them. We have potatoes planted this year. He hilled them when he planted them, and will add more dirt as they grow larger.
No... the cantelope and watermelon will not cross to create a new fruit. We have ours planted next to each other.

This far north watermellon and cantalope are hard to grow Barb. I've tried before. They only got about as big as a softball but were very sweet and juicy.
